TAKING CARE OF THE CARETAKERS

Janai Lowenstein, M.S.

If there ever was a time for caretakers to nurture themselves, it is now. The changing world momentum is shaking our daily lives from skyrocketing gas prices to paranoia over deathly diseases and a toxic environment. Our task, as the present keepers of the planet and of our children, is too overwhelming to contemplate for long. To prevent ourselves from becoming apathetic wet noodles or stiffened icicles of frozen fear, we can create comforting warmth by increasing Care on Earth. With proper care, the earth would not be in its present shape. By first caring for ourselves and our children, we role model to our children that which is most vital and precious to survival at this time. This also creates a solid foundation for extended caring to others. We have the opportunity to utilize stress as an incentive to improve the human and earth condition.

What's the first step? Having the intention to heal ourselves. Focus on health and realize that when we do this, we benefit all others who touch our lives in some way. This strengthens our link in the human chain of events through cause and effect. How exciting it is to know that each of us truly makes a difference simply by the way we live our daily lives and take care of ourselves. When we adults take care of ourselves, we can provide optimal care for our children. They need us to care by using tools appropriate for our times in order to create peace on earth. Without a doubt, the future truly is in our hands, whether these hands are healthy or unhealthy, caring or uncaring, visionary or short-sighted. A brief rest when the body says "Please rest, I am tired", encouraging others to care for themselves, accepting our humanness instead of repressing the fact, living honestly by listening to feedback from our bodies, forgiving ourselves and others, taking deep breaths when angry or frustrated and communicating clearly about it, sleeping deeply at night......these are just some of the very simple caring activities that each of us can do in our little corners of the world to create health and peace.. We CAN feel better as caretakers, providing beneficial rewards for ourselves, our children, the planet. We can alleviate great suffering by using stress skills by the mere fact that they diminish the pervasive image of being victimized by life conditions. And these caring actions on our part will serve as the foundation for the future caretakers. Our children learn from how we live.....and so do we if we use our noggins!
